I started volunteering thanks to my 10-year-old daughter Diana. By setting an example, she gave me a lead in doing good deeds. Nowadays, we prepare master classes for children and adults together. Besides, we help organizing community events. And I believe that it is cool to be a volunteer!

My name is Roman Andreyev. I am 17 years old; I am a graduate of the Sumy gymnasium. I have faced the choice: to remain to study in Sumy or to go to other city. Study in other city is an opportunity, but here I have found a place where I feel good, and where I can help somebody. I am a participant of Youth club and the volunteer of the Sumy Volunteer Community Network.

Why I am a volunteer? I like helping people. I like to give somebody a piece of light and heat. I have found my own way to form my personality, and found my place in volunteering. Eventually, I like feeling that I belong to something bigger and do good deeds.

I am involved in project “We are close to you (Skype at Home)”. Also I was an active participant in project “From hand to hand (collection of humanitarian help)”. I take part in the International and All-Ukrainian campaigns, social initiatives. Now the new project “Grandmother’s Recipes” has been started and I plan to participate in it.

My name is Marina and it seams, I am 20. At least, it is written so in a document called “passport”. Honestly, I don’t feel like that. In school days it was somehow clear and simply. If you are 5 years old, then you have such duties as to pick up toys, to obey, to do homework for preparation for school. If you are 10, then to study, to wash the dishes, to clean up your room, to look after pets. If 15 – … it is clear too. And the time went correctly, one line, approximately with one speed, everything was in that minute in which had to be.

But from a certain stage of my life it became already not so. The line was bent, has cracked, and deadlocks have appeared. At that time my life has turned over. More precisely, it is possible even to tell, it was dropped. I hope that only in order that I could get up and to put it according to my own design.

When the train has brought me to Sumy (I still don’t know whether I was in this train a passenger or his driver), I have opened some new horizons for myself. Not in the financial or material sense, but in moral. In this city I feel like at home. Not only because there are my parents, but also because there live people who let me on their house full of ideas and good deeds.

Our communication has begun with the simple help. The help for people in need they saw for the first time. They taught me how pleasant it is to receive and also to give. Giving became my good habit and I am really thankful for this opportunity. Who, if not we? Who, if not I? When, if not now?

Everybody always leaves forever. It is impossible to come back – instead of us, somebody else comes back. Маx Frei «Simple miracle things». This magical phrase I read a long time ago, in that old pre-war life in which there were children, lessons, trips to the Crimea, research projects, the play in What? Where? When?, the meetings with the friends, the work in the summer camp, scripts and productions, Lugansk, peace and mom. Then this life was over, and for some time it seemed that I ended up too. There were left only the bags with some clothes caught in a hurry, three old pensioners – my mother and father-in-law with mother-in-law, crying on any occasion, afraid of people (especially men, especially in the uniform) four-year old grandson. We passed by roadblocks, villages and cities. The strange life hung in the piece of moribund web of the habitual actions. The feelings of Robinson, and around – not strangers, but UFOs – at their homes, with their normal habitual life. Everything around suddenly became unimportant. What is here and now-no matter. It is important – how is THERE, where I remained in my copy of 2014. Confusion. Emptiness. As if all the air came out, all thoughts, all feelings – everything and only an empty shell-like remained and looks like me, but not me. Whether I lived or did not live – without home, without friends, without work. And then I appeared in Sumi. More precisely, everything began in “Hesed Haim». There was sympathetic without pity, noisy, many children and mentally warm. And here the shell gradually began to be filled with the acquaintances and concepts, and all of a sudden it was needed something of mine, that I was able to do. And yet it was needed something new, which I started to learn. And then I remembered the magic phrase- everybody always leaves forever. Somebody else comes back. And I stopped to regret about myself last. And I started to fill myself the true one. I was busy with the children, organized games for them, and the kids warmed my grandson. I wrote questions, explained the homework, just talked and played with the children. Then somehow it turned out that it’s not just talks, games and lessons. It is volunteering…. What is the volunteering for me? Why do I do it? Because I can. Because to help. Because you can live in such a way. And just for nothing. It’s just that it is a new, large component of me-new. The other me. Living in Sumy, looking at Lugansk as another planet, which possibly will be visited by me new.

My name is Alexandra, I am 15 years old. I am a volunteer! And I am proud of it! I go to the community since my childhood, and I have endured a lot of things with its participants. I visit Hesed every week. I am a participant of the Youth club “Kokhavim” the pupil of Sunday school. It gives me much pleasure. I found many friends in the community. When the new guys come to us, we accept them with pleasure and we try to make for them as much comfort as possible in our community. One of my main occupations in the community is a volunteer activity. I like to help people and animals, and to carry out various social events! Together with our Youth club and Volunteer Network we realize many interesting ideas of our leader, Valeria Tsareva. We are lucky to have such a leader. We visit animals’ shelter, we help elderly people and the children of risk group, FRP. Now in our community two new actions started: the collecting of the waste paper and the collecting of the used batteries. It is very important for the nature keeping and for me. As for me, it is very interesting and cheerful to be a volunteer, and, above all — it allows me to feel necessary and useful to the surrounding people, animals and the nature. Smiles of the children, happy muzzles of the dogs and pure natural zones without any garbage — here is the main award of the volunteer!!

My name is Mirskaya Alexandra Vladimirovna. I am 18 years old. I study at Sumi Pedagogical University, choreography department, I am fond of dancing from my childhood, when I was 5. From the second grade and till now I dance in an exemplary dance group “Amelia” of Sumi Aleksandrivska gymnasium. Dancing became my life and my future profession.
Since my childhood I attend the Jewish community center programs and Sunday school. Practically, I grew up in Hesed — my mom brought me here, when I was 2,5 years old. At the beginning I was only the participant of children’s programs, when I grew up — I went to the Youth Club, and with the time, I myself began to assist in the Organization of different events and in the conduct of the activities as madrih-volunteer. In the Youth club I learned about the Volunteer movement of Sumi Volunteer Network “Community”.
I am interested in to be a volunteer and to be engaged in the community work.
The Volunteering has always been, it is and it will be important because it is a good way to help the people in need selflessly.
At the moment, I am an active volunteer of Sumi Volunteer Network “Community”, I assisted in the Organization and conduct of the many volunteer events. Here I found many new friends and like-minded.

Hello. My name is Alexander Nikishin, I am 18 years old. I live in the city of Sumi. I am a student and a beginner photographer.
For many years I go to the local Jewish community, where I learned about the Volunteer Center. The word “volunteer” in Ukraine over the past few years has become especially popular, but the value and importance of this activities only few people understand. As for me, the charity, helping others, commitment are not just slogans. I want and I can make the world a little bit better, and namely this the volunteers do. At the moment it is a difficult time for the Ukraine, and we – the people — more than ever, must be together, we just have to take care of each other, that is why the volunteer movement is so important.
The Volunteer Center will help me to develop myself as a photographer: I plan to do the photoreports. At the moment I help in the organization of the various events, promotions and celebrations. This is what brings the joy not only to others, but me, too. The understanding of the thing that you can be for help to somebody- is an important thing for the self-realization. Helping in little, we do a great thing together.

My name is Arkady Vadimovich Sherstyuk. I am 16 years old. I am a pupil at Sumi Aleksandrivska gymnasium, in the 11 grade. I am cheerful, active, creative, love sports, especially tennis and bowling. I am one of the soloists of folk vocal Studio “Aviv”, doing acting skills, trying myself as a filmmaker, and I play the saxophone.

I came to Hesed even being a child, I attended Sunday school and children’s day care center. When I got older, I started to attend Jewish youth club. Now I am a madrih and a coordinator of the teenager leadership project, which is “Shabbat in guests». The Head of the youth club is also the Coordinator of the Sumi Volunteer Network “Community”. She proposed me to try myself as a volunteer. In the world there are very many people who need the assistance, and they can get it exactly from the volunteers. Everybody, who is in need, can be helped by something: to go for a walk with the homeless animal, to help to an elderly person or just simply emotional communication. I’ve always wanted to become a volunteer selflessly helping the people. This opportunity was given to me by a Volunteer Network.
